Why your gut is the first place to look
A perfect grocery list you cannot absorb is just a receipt.
Educational information only. Nothing here is medical advice. Talk with a clinician before changing medication, diet, or training, and call 911 in an emergency. Full disclaimer.
People redesign their entire diet before they ask whether last night's meal actually landed. That order is backwards. Digestion sits upstream of energy, skin, a long food-sensitivity list, a surprising amount of mood, and most "I eat well and feel poorly" stories. It has limits: cancer, infection, and injury ignore your chew count.
The short version
- Sit down. Chew. Include protein and a cooked plant. Walk ten minutes.
- Notice the next two hours: reflux, bloat, urgency, fog, or nothing.
- Ban fewer foods until you have tried better conditions.
What "lands" means
A nutrient on a label is a hope. A nutrient in your tissue is a result. Between them sit chewing, stomach acid, enzymes, bile, a moving small bowel, a gut lining that has to tell dinner from an invader, and a microbial colony with its own politics.
When a step skips, the body improvises. It may speed up and lose water. It may slow down and ferment. It may start treating last year's lunch as this year's enemy. The food gets blamed, and the forbidden list grows into a personality.
A one-week experiment
Skip the cleanse. Keep the foods you already tolerate and change the setup:
- Sit down for one meal a day without a screen.
- Chew longer than feels efficient.
- Include a protein you know and a cooked plant.
- Walk ten minutes after, if you can.
- Jot two-hour notes: a line or two on what happened.
You are gathering a timeline, and a diagnosis can wait for a clinician. If the same meal feels different when you are rushed versus seated, you have learned more than many weeks of elimination teach. Bring the notes to your next visit, and fold the meal into a home routine.
The rest of the week talks too
A nervous system that never leaves the meeting will put digestion last. See Stress. Four hours of sleep makes the same meal louder. See Sleep. What you eat matters too; see What food is for.
When to stop experimenting alone
Blood in the stool, black stool, progressive weight loss, fever, night sweats, food that will not go down, pain that wakes you, or unexplained iron deficiency are reasons to be seen by a clinician soon. Skip the how-tos for those.
For the quieter chronic noise, like the bloat that has a favorite day of the week, change the conditions of one meal before you buy another powder that "supports digestion."
