Allostatic load in plain language

Adaptation is healthy. Adaptation without a refund is how you end up wired at night and flat in the morning.

Educational information only. Nothing here is medical advice. Talk with a clinician before changing medication, diet, or training, and call 911 in an emergency. Full disclaimer.

Allostasis is the work of staying stable by changing: heart rate, glucose, attention, and inflammation all shift as the day demands. Allostatic load is what builds up when that work never gets a refund. You can skip the Greek and still recognize the bill: you fall asleep late, wake already behind, snap at people you like, crave salt and sugar, get sick after every deadline, and call it your personality.

The short version

  • Load includes feelings, and it also includes hours, noise, under-eating, and short nights.
  • Recovery is whatever you do on purpose to pay it back.
  • Each week, compare what you added with what you refunded.

Load comes in many forms

A hard email is load. So is a toddler. So is a noisy apartment, a calorie deficit you branded as discipline, a training block copied from someone who sleeps eight hours, and a week of short nights. The body adds the whole invoice together, whatever your calendar called each line.

That is why "I meditated and I still feel wrecked" says nothing bad about the meditation. A ten-minute skill cannot refund a fifty-hour week. The skill can still be worth keeping; it just cannot be the whole finance department.

Recovery is specific

Recovery returns a system toward baseline: sleep, a meal with protein, a walk without another optimization podcast, a boundary that removes a recurring tax, time with a person who needs no performance from you. A spa day can count, and so can a quiet Tuesday. Movement can be recovery or load depending on the week.

How to read your week

Once, write two lists:

  1. What I added: hours, intensity, caffeine, late light, new obligations.
  2. What I refunded: sleep, a sit-down meal, a screen-free walk, a boundary that held.

If the first list is your identity and the second is theoretical, the load will find a hormone, a gut, or a mood and write on it. See Hormones and Digestion.

Three refunds that survive a real month

  • Protect one sleep window.
  • Eat one meal sitting down.
  • Take one walk without a screen.

Then sort the load you cannot drop (the job, the kid) from the load you added for no one (the 11 p.m. scroll, the extra interval session). Put one refund into a home routine.

What this page will leave alone

You do not have to quit your life; some loads are the point of a life. Ordinary difficulty is ordinary, and reducing load does not reverse a named disease. The claim here is narrower: unpaid adaptation, month after month, is one reason people look fine on a single lab and feel unwell a year later.

If stress comes with thoughts of harming yourself, panic that will not settle, or days you cannot function, talk to a clinician soon. In the U.S., call or text 988 any time.

Bring your two lists to a visit if you have one. You cannot refund a bill you keep calling a vibe.
